- HGVs make up 3% of the fleet, but they are involved in 14% of fatal collisions
- 400 people a year in Europe die because of HGV blind spots
- These deaths could be prevented with practical and affordable technology. Adding cameras, lane departure warning systems and emergency braking systems are straighforward and affordable.

Fiona Hall, the MEP for Northumberland, proposed Written Declaration 81 in the European Parliament to address these issues, and the proposal passed in March 2011. The matter is now with the European Commission to respond.
