how dangerous is the reef? is it very shallow?

Well, most of the reefs in Sumatra are pretty sharp and a wave has to be pretty shallow in order to barrel like that. But it's far from the most dangerous wave out there. It's pretty much perfect. You just make the drop, set your line, and get kegged off your arse.

Of course! They were just sussing things out at this point. It was a new wave; not a bad idea to let a set go by to see how it's going to behave.

Umm, I don't know. But almost ALL of them are pretty sharp, so it's best to try to avoid hitting the bottom.

Have any of you ever been to a perfect, but heavy/shallow reef that no one has ever surfed before?? It might not be a bad idea to let the first set go so you can watch it, especially you're there all alone with only a handful of your mates, and you've got all the time in the world to surf it. Trust me; these guys got plenty of kegs that day.
