ALAN BATES SAID: "Vershinin is this figure who almost becomes a fantasy, a mirage. for the 3 sisters. Particularly, of course, for Masha, who falls in love with him. And he plays up to that. Not maliciously. He's just someone who lives out an idea of himself. Or someone else's idea of him. He's almost like drifting in thru life. And letting it all happen to him. And he plays the role that circumstances give him."

  • As an American, I always found it so refreshing that, though he was a handsome actor, seemed completely oblivious to that fact when he was acting. He was always one my favorite English actors, was very unique, and certainly left his mark.RIP, Mr.. Bates

  • At 3:09--SO agree when he says all great plays should be filmed for preservation!! It continually breaks my heart that there are legendary performances I've read or heard about but never got to experience and never will simply because the production happened before my time (or beyond my financial reach)...

  • He was a handsome man! His bisexuality attracts me to him more. ;)

  • I watched the The Rose with BETTE Midler .Too bad he wasnt romantic involved with Rose.Sorry to hear about the death of Alan Bates,

  • It's hard to believe that nine months after this interview, Bates died of cancer.

He looks well in this interview.

  • I never thought about these things, but i suppose you're right.I think most

Americans think the English either speak like George Sanders or Jack Wild, of "Oliver" fame.(LOL)I've learned to appreciate the "essence" of things. WDTW, in it's simplicity, is a perfect visualization of a child's wonder and innocence.Yes, definitely NOT mawkish. You English seem to have that ability in spades.

  • I suppose he is a bit "mannered"....but watchable?? His voice is soft perhaps thats it. I do like Alan Alda's voice...thats a New York one isn't it? Similar accent and sound to Barry Manilow. Also WDTW quite moving but not mawkish...maybe THe English are better at not mawkish (generalisation)

  • WDTW-Beautiful, understated movie John M-I dunno- Is it because his voice is soft? Sorry, but his"manner" is grating on my nerves.(LOL)

  • I dunno really. What my wife sees in his voice. I like Alan Bates in "Whistle Down The Wind" when he uses a Northern English accent. Personally I think John Malkovich has an excellent voice...innunciation etc. His accent is easy on the ear.

  • Interesting. So what constitutes a lovely voice to an Englishman?Quite honestly, I never noticed Mr. Bates voice.

  • My wife says he has a lovely voice. It makes me jealous that I don't!!!!
