"Skyliner", performed by the Woodside Big Band, based in Zaanstad, the Netherlands, featuring Arnout Rol on baritonesax. Recorded April 30th 2001 at the Royal Jazz Festival in Zaandam.
The sound is good, but I just heard another played too slow like this & it lacks the intensity of the original - I just went back to compare. The sharpness, the crispness of the sound is missing. The swing feel is sluggish.
And the BIGGEST thing missing - Forte-Piano on all the instruments, attacking EACH not initially & backing off on volume immediately. Ray Conniff's perfection of the forte-piano style is what made him world famous. I think these guys COULD be as good as Barnet's band!
