Algae to be Refined Into Cost-Effective, Non-Polluting Biodiesel
Can algae -- the green slime that forms on the top of stagnant pools -- reduce greenhouse gas emissions and be the source of a new renewable bio-fuel? The Holy Grail in the renewable energy sector has been to create a clean, green process which uses only light, water and air to create fuel.
Vertigro Energy is a joint venture between Global Green Solutions and Valcent Products. Vertigro's algae-to-biofuel technology mass produces algae and extracts algae oil. This oil can be refined into a cost-effective, non-polluting diesel biofuel. The algae derived fuel will be an energy efficient replacement for fossil fuels and can be used in any diesel powered vehicle or machinery. In addition, 90% by weight of the algae is captured carbon dioxide, which is "sequestered" by this process, contributing significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
The Vertigro technology was developed in response to a huge unsatisfied demand for vegetable oil feedstock by biodiesel refiners and marketers. Biodiesel, in 2000, was the only alternative fuel in the United States to have successfully completed the Environmental Protection Agency required Tier I and Tier II health effects testing under the Clean Air Act. A U.S. Department of Energy study has shown that the production and use of biodiesel, compared to petroleum diesel, resulted in a 78.5% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

most definately not - like the hemp oil industry... google "the many uses of hemp" or something like that - I got an email with a whole list of stuff, like how ford built a car made of hemp plastics that was as strong as steel etc..
The real beauty of this is, after the oil is pressed out of the algae pulp, the pulp can be fermented to create ethanol. The pulp remaining AFTER the ethanol production can be used as food product for livestock, or as fertilizer. And anything left over after that I'm sure will have applications as well.
Its only a problem so long as its a price point for the energy companies. Once the cost of algae production becomes competitive with fossil fuels, you will see the energy companies embrace it whole heartedly. Its only a matter of time. =)
Part of the beauty of algae is that you can grow it in pretty much any quality of water - even water unsuitable for drinking or other uses. PLUS - in a closed-loop system like you see here, the water is recycled, so you lose almost none to evaporation.
this is just 1 of three plants that can literally save our planet. the other 2 are hemp and flax, all 3 can be used together, and they each can be made into a variety of different things, from super food to medicine to paper, plastics, cosmetics, clothes, fuel, u name it. too bad big business and government cares more about the other "green" (dollar bills) than they do about saving the planet and human race
Yea it's funny how the government gives us incentives to be "green" but they won't put money into real bio-fuels like the ones you mentioned. I think right now it is up to independent companies and organizations to start this process and in time we can at least replace gasoline with bio-diesel.
