wow, you guys are all hating on India, and Nandita....let's all just chill out, take a look at her smile, drink a martini, or a cold beer, and try to appreciate that kind word go a long way. spewing mean spirited crap about people that you don't know personally or think you know because you heard a soundbite, then go off on this "intillectual" debate, (on a bollywood countdown show, no less) on youtube..Really?...Lets just marinate in the beauty that is Nandita Das, shall we??
Indian society is not thee only one with bigotry, racism & opression...the gr8 also do exactly the same things, only under different lables, using legit sounding terms under the garb of xtian charity, & on a much wider scale...
perhaps Nandita needs to do some homework before working on social concerns. She did an advaert for Teach for India, the Indian variation of Teach for America. Teach for America was the creation of Union Carbide after the Bhopal disaster. Union Carbide tried to avoid responsibility in India but sponsored Teach for America to repair it's image in the United States.
Anyway, um...how is this rant even relevant to what was discussed above?
I'll simply say that just because you have ignorant fundamentalists in a country (they occur everywhere) doesn't give you the right to be a racist jackass. Labeling individuals as "browns" and clumping an entire nation, which is extremely diverse, as one thing...yeah, that says more about you than it does them.
"American" means a nationality...not one particular ethnic group. That is pretty illogical if you ask me...especially since the U.S.A. is the most diverse country in the world.
But when you over simplify it and just say american...that can mean any of the various Americas...or American territories.
and you know what asshole, I'm not "brown" you racist piece of shit...I'm probably "whiter" than you...I'm just not a retarded regressive bigot. I find ppl from all across the globe beautiful.
If I meant "American" to mean "ALL ethnic groups" then "American" would be indistinguishable from another group, thus it could never be a valid statement, and therefore it is illogical to conclude that by "American" I meant anything but mainstream American (White).
PS I don't normally have conversations with browns, therefore you should consider yourself lucky.

wth are you even going on about? you got issues dude, ISSUES.
I love how you get on your little soapbox and make a spill about India. ummm....what?
I never stated that I knew anything about India let alone be an expert on their social injustices.
This got completely and utterly OFF TOPIC.
Back on topic:
I simply don't like bigotry and racism. I'll always speak out against it...online, in person...wherever, whenever. And you my friend are a racist.

Plus, Nandita Das is very outspoken on most of the issues you raised.
I'm simply perplexed.
and what's the point of the new moniker? Strange.

well, it is a good thing that the term "american" represents ppl of all ethnic backgrounds....a beautiful melting pot of diversity.
if you used "american" to mean white, blonde haired, blue eyed girl....then I would've called you a fucking asshole. :D
