The newsman said that the lights were caused by the cut of electricity but i dont think so

Yeah, those flashes are transformers (the boxes that connect up big power lines) shorting out and blowing up. I live in California and saw one blow just like that during the Hector Mine Earthquake, and the whole sky kept lighting up from transformer blow-outs. I turned on the TV and the local news said, "If you're watching this broadcast, you're one of the few." You'll see that in any big earthquake in a city.

This came from a report given by Samuel L Mitchell, a congressman from New York State, eventually a senator, and a naturalist. This report was delivered in 1814. I don't think any transformers were blowing in Knoxville back then. There is a long history of witnesses describing lights in the sky during an earthquake.
