This is the final of the 6th World tournament of the IKO(2) kyokushin organization from 1996 -now renamed to WKO shinkyokushin.

The finalists are Norichika Tsukamoto (130) vs Kunihiro Suzuki (86), two now legendary fighters (damn, they look young! And Suzuki got hair!).

This was only a few months after the great split in kyokushin which resulted in several kyokushin groups running separate world tournaments (see my video of Kenji Yamaki vs Hajime Kazum for the final of the 6th world tournament in the other major kyokushin group -IKO1). This sadly split the top fighters into several tournaments -it would have been epic to see them all face in the same tournament.

Classic fullcontact knockdown karate rules. No punches or elbows to the head, only below the neck. Kicks and knees anywhere

  • Ball of the foot mawashi-geri to the liver. Very precise! Still, I found the beginning wierd. The big guy (130) was doing nothing but look for the big techniques, running around and round until he could set it up. No careful attrition in this bout! Once the liver was bashed, the rest of the body had no more stamina for the fight. What a mongrel match-up for number 86!

  • True. but I think Tsukamoto walked into this fight already heavily damaged from the previous fights in the tournament.

The few body blows Suzuki got in shook Tsukamoto, and it didnt take many lowkicks until Tsukamoto had visible problems to even walk with his left leg (after the lowkick at 1.57).

So perhaps the reason Tsukamoto was running was that he knew from the start that he would not be able to take a attrition fight.

And he was losing until he got the liver kick in.

  • @Kamforka shame on you !!

  • @fittestofthefittest Yes! One could say "Well uh the other guy went 2 days and the same could be said for him." BUT not all injuries are the same! There is more to it than meets the eye. A lot of people also say "Why do kyokushin fighters go down from some techniques that aren't a knock out?" Because they are fighting other kyokushin fighters who are CONDITIONED. This is not like typical mma.

  • こんな前蹴り食らったら死にます

  • That was 1 of the greatest World Tournament finales. Tsukamoto walked on the tatami injured and had to fight smart. Peolple have to understand that this is a WORLD OPEN WEIGHT TOURNAMENT; so to win you have to deafeat opponents bigger, smaller, and the same size as you. Also, in order to win you have to sustain 2 days of full contact fighting at the top international level, as well as win at least 7 fights to become champion... Basically; its alot harder than it looks.

  • shame to Kyokushin

  • Was he losing because he was avoiding exchanges early in the fight? I thought he was trying to set-up the axe kick from the get-go. The body positioning was giving him away IMO. Talk about telegraphing!!! Still, I would have an awful time trying to complete the bout on my feet against these guys! I'd be stoked to go to a decision!

  • When is the 2009 kyokushin with face punches???
