Author lê thị diễm thúy returned to her hometown of San Diego in February for an engaging series of presentations about the 2011 One Book, One San Diego selection, her novel, The Gangster We Are All Looking For, and about her life as a young Vietnamese refuge growing up in San Diego and the powerful impact the Library had on her.
"After I was done with class, I was only allowed to go to the library -- and the Linda Vista Branch Library quickly became my home," she said. "I loved the library because it was a place I could go to be alone with my books, but still be in a public space with others. I felt safe and warm there. I didn't need money; I only needed a library card to give me access to everything in the building. I am indebted to librarians -- they raised me along with my parents."
