Justin Lallier "Postage Stamp Album, illustrated with Maps" (the world's first printed album), Second Edition (January 1863), the cover and binding somewhat worn (a few loose pages) but the brass clasp fine. With front page manuscript inscription "To Edith, from her affectionate brother Thewlis, 26th Oct 1863". Contains the original intact collection of early classics in mixed condition - the stamps stuck down (normal for the pre-hinge time) and some irregular stamps cut-to shape to fit the printed spaces (e.g. GB 1847-54 Embossed set, 1854 India 4 annas), plus a few early forgeries (e.g. Ionian Islands set). Note good "England" including 1840 1d black (small/touching margins, lightly cancelled), 1841 1d unused & used plus 2d used, 1855-57 surface-printed 6d & 1s, 1862 set to 9d; Australian States; Canada Provinces; Cape of Good Hope (1d to 1s triangulars used); France including 1849 1fr carmine (faults); German States (including Baden, Bavaria, Brunswick, Hanover, Oldenburg, Prussia, Wurttemberg etc.); Norway; Switzerland; Turkey (1863 imperf values unused); United States; and many others. An amazing original collection! (approx 450 stamps)
