This mare is tested as CA/CA affected and her offspring as 100% carriers. She never had an affected foal because by accident she was never bred to a carrier. She has a normal life with foals, shows, transport, no obviously signs of the disease to see. Just when she was 1 year old she had an accident when playing with other foals and has broken her pelvis. For that she was never ridden but regularily worked on the ground and noone ever thaught that she is strange or even not healthy.
This video is to show that it is so important to test breeding stock - STALLIONS AND MARES - because this mare is an example how fast the disease can spread out without the breeders knowledge.
Here on the video she is 20 years old.

  • Well we didn't know until this year that she is affected because she is a horse without clinical signs but a positiv test result in february 2010.

How can you know that a clinical healthy looking horse is sick without having a test result that tells you the opposite?

She even gave this year a beautiful colt birth because she was in foal when I got the test result this year and it was a huge shock for everybody who knows her because noone expected that she should be a CA afffected horse.

To my luck the sire is CA N/N for that the foal is just CA carrier but now as I know that she is affected I will no more breed her for sure even her foals are absolutly stunning

  • What a shame she is affected. A beautiful mare!! It does prove as you say! Test your breeding stock!!

  • I m glad she has a good home with ppl who take care about her, but why did u breed with her when u know she has it? Sorry but horses with any kinds of deseases should not produce foals. Same with norwegian horses and cerebellar ataxia for example.
