Tibetans Rally in Taipei, Taiwan for Uprising Anniversary
March 10

In Taiwan, hundreds of Tibetans and their supporters commemorated the second anniversary of the Lhasa Uprising in 2008.

Tibet supporters gathered at Taipei City centre, holding up banners and pictures of the Dalai Lama, before marching down the street for a demonstration.

The Taiwan Friends of Tibet arranged the rally to demand an end to what they say is the persecution of Tibetans by the Chinese regime.

Supporters who took part in Sunday's rally voiced their concerns.

[Yang Tsung-li, Protester]:
"As a Taiwanese, we are a country without much international status, so Taiwanese people feel sympathetic to their situation, and we also have the responsibility to support the Tibetans by democratic means."

The president of the Taiwan Friends of Tibet lashed out at the Chinese regime at for not protecting human rights in Tibet.

[Chow Mei-li, President, Taiwan Friends of Tibet]:
"Today is March 14, and I think Taiwanese people should have a stronger awareness and stand together with the Tibetans because we have a common enemy. China already occupied Tibet, and we cannot let Taiwan end up like Tibet."

Tibetan struggle was not against the Chinese people but against the policy makers of the country. We saw that many Chinese were now coming out in support of the Tibetan struggle, which is a sign of hope.
