If you're like most piano students, you spend much of your time playing solo piano. How can you get your keyboard style to swing?

One way to jazz up your solo work is to use walking bass lines. When you play a walking bass line on the piano, the idea is to treat your left hand as if it were playing string bass parts. For examples of great bass players playing walking bass lines with equally great pianists check out Ray Brown with Oscar Peterson or Eddie Gomez with Bill Evans.

This is a short tutorial that will show you a simple, but effective example of a walking bass line for solo piano. We use a popular jazz standard to illustrate the use of a solo piano walking bass line and show you notes and hand positions to get you started.

For more information and to download the sheet music to our Walking Bass example, visit our Walking Bass Music Theory page at: http://www.edmascari.com/walkingbass/

    Chloe, don't know if you ever got the notes . . . . the basic progression is C, G, D, F. The slides he's talking about go - C, G#, G, D#, D, F#, F, C#, C. Each note gets a full count and the sharp notes slide to it's natural. Hope that helps.
