From May 28, 1961. The first ever race on the oval at Indianapolis Raceway Park was ran on schedule despite the paving of the track not taking place yet.

  • Should've left it without pavement!

  • I was at the race that day. I was thirteen and met A.J. while he was talking to the driver of the car that my dad had built and wrenched on. We raced IMCA in the midwest but came to this show to dabble in USAC. I saw all the greats and met many of them. We race against Parnelli Jones at our home track in Pitsfeild Il and I stood with him and our driver, Jerry Blundy, while we ate Hot Dogs before the race. Jerry was enshrined in the Sprint Car Hall of Fame at Knoxville Ia. Great memories.
