Nearer, My God, To Thee:
Words by Sarah Flower Adams
(Based loosely on Gen. 28: 11-19)
This hymn, in the last 100 years is so associated with the sinking of the RMS Titanic in legend & lore, (because it is said that this was the last song played by the band onboard that fateful ship on its maiden voyage on April, 15th 1912, as the ship descended under the water on that terrible night) and becuase of the epic James Cameron blockbuster movie 'Titanic', that people have practically forgotten the hymn's intended meaning by its author. Actually, it is about the story of Jacob, found in the book of Genesis. After fleeing from his brother Esau's anger, Jacob was forced to sleep in a rocky place with a stone for his pillow. As he slept, he dreamed of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels going up and down the ladder. The Lord God stood on top of the ladder and spoke to Jacob of the promise of Abraham and the land given to his descendents. When Jacob awoke he knew that God had been in this place and surely it was the gateway to Heaven.
Lyrics:
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams Id be nearer, my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel Ill raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward Ill fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
There in my Fathers home, safe and at rest,
There in my Saviors love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
