Back then the International game was not physical, and I think the international game was also played on wider, bigger rinks then in North America.  So offensively you moved the puck down the sides and the defenders tended to stay in the middle of the ice in International games. The Soviets were not quite ready for the Flyers meeting them at the boards.

The Soviets were bitches and still did not win every game in their North American tour with the NHL.
