@Carpenter261 In a competition where nations have the ability to show what makes their music culture different from others, England decided to go with something that is practically sung in any high-school choir in any English-speaking country - "drama ballads" like "All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera. England has a GREAT music history (with the exception of a blatant lack of "giant" composers in the Romantic era).

@Carpenter261 History? This "popera" genre, I believe, started in the 1960's with the collaboration of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. (Which was then later overkilled by Webber in poperas like Evita, Phantom of the Opera, and more; also Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli) The fact I see Deon, who has nothing to do with Eurovision or England (she's Canadian) in the sidebar shows how actually universal the "drama-ballad" really is.

@Netheeros couldn't agree with you more. i would love to be able to have some stake in this contest and not just watch it. if america could just get some really big jazz or rock singer/group then it might have some hold, but if all Americas music industry wants to produce is shitty pop and rap then we would have no chance anyway

@quinntissentialmusic Why would we include a racially/culturally divisive "Protestant" theme within a song that should encompass an entire nation? This was suitable for an entire country - not created to satisfy social elitist individuals like yourself. The very fact you regard this as "musical trash" demonstrates your distinct lack of culture and poor knowledge of history. It would stand you in good stead to remember just how diverse the UK actually is.

she totally thought she was going to get elbowed... hahhaah, seriously though you were in his personal bubble

@LifeSaver996 Thank you very much. As someone from the UK, I think that is very kind, and I agree with you. I think that Serbia should have won in 2011, because their song is really catch, and I would have given them 12 :)
Unfortunately, this year we weren't as good as we were in 2009, but we hope to keep up an outstanding reputation, so hopefully we'll have a great song next year. Best wishes.

Ugh, this kind of popera, Weber, shallow ballad, crappily written piece of Broadway musical trash fails to show even a glimmer of UK's cultural standing in musical history, culture, and significance. Where's Celtic influence? Where are Protestant hymn-like accompaniment? Where are the folk and symphonic influences from composers like Elgar and R. V. Williams?

01:34 hahaha, the fiddler hits the singer.
@Netheeros I know I'm American and should probably take that as an insult, but it's true so I can't.

@xTrickyNikkix America has a major ego complex. They wouldn't be happy with just one entry. They'll want multiple entries so that the majority of citizens can be happy. Even then, you'd never really hear the unique American music like Jazz, if you did, it would probably be country, western, or rap. A lot of people don't like that type of music, but those are the bigger artists in America. I also wouldn't want to see other big artists in Eurovision either like Lady Gaga. Doesn't feel right.
