The first Denver Silent Film Festival (Sept. 23-25, 2011) invited composer/pianist Donald Sosin, a leading silent film music expert, to lead a 3-day workshop with students from University of Colorado Denver. The ensemble consisted of 16 singers from Erin Hackel's a cappella groups, and eight guitarists, 3 laptop maestros, a synth player, a drummer and a violinist from the classes of Todd Reid and Paul Musso. Sosin guided the proceedings from center stage, alternating between the Steinway grand and a Roland RD-700SX. The response, as you can hear, was tremendous. It is believed to be the largest ensemble ever gathered to play improvised music for this classic film.
