Here you can see some scenes of an heathen (Asatru) wedding as it may have been common across central and northern Europe before christianization. I like it because it is made very authentic.

In the ceremony Askur and Embla marry. The priest calls Odin (the father of gods, god of wisdom, magic) while Embla carries a raven as a hat. This is a symbol for Odin, who has 2 raves as pets that fly through the world and tell him everything that happened the end of the day. Statues of Odin, Thor and Freya can be seen. Embla lies down two dolls to Freya - the beautiful godess of love, magic, fertility - to symbolize her connection with Askur.

After the ceremony Embla receives presents from Greenland and Arabia. Finally Askur receives a Freya-pendant to protect their love. When the couple receives the presents they sit next to a Thor statue, who ist the god of Thunder, battle and strength. He is the protector of humans in all kinds of situations.

Freyas brother Frey (god of fertility, plants, etc) is also mentioned when they sing.

Scences are from the great movie "Hvíti víkingurinn" (the white viking), which is unfortunately very poorly known. A new version called "Embla" has been released recently, but it is also hard to get. The movie takes place in the year 1000 in Norway and shows the process of christianization.

  • Im interesting in northern mithology and asatru too. Who can translating the text? I would like the english/german text. Please, send me the english/german version! Thanks!

  • Many people already asked this.

Thus I now invested some time and created English subtitels. They will pop up if you click on the speech bubble.

    Please check it out.

  • I've known about this film but haven't been able to find it anywhere. Is it very violent?

  • This movie - Hvíti víkingurinn - is on youtube.

But some parts are violent, yes.

  • Asatru is an amazing religion.

  • @MrBlablaful they're speaking icelandic, i can tell because i am icelandic. it's not that kind of words or accent modern icelanders use but it's not old norse. old norse is by the way very similar to icelandic

  • Which language is this? I recognise a little bit Medieval Dutch and German...

  • @admirerofvoguls i can end you links to study if you want

  • @Stormyman81

I agree that not all Goddesses have to be addressed at all times and that Heathens often selected worshipping those Gods they felt most connected to. However, when solemnizing a marriage, I think that the Goddess of marriages should get at least some recognition...and if you do not thank her again until your anniversary, that is okay, too.

  • @pupsenok I guess the movie was not meant to be an exact historical reconstruction and the director claimed some artistic freedom with the Sheela-na-Gig and the "blood brotherhood". Still it is more realistic than most other movies around. We all are still waiting for a realistic movie reconstructing Norse paganism on the scientific frontier. However I do not think all Godesses have to be adressed as pagans always selected worshipping those gods they felt the most connected to.

  • @sarux

It does not matter that you think Frigga is the same as Freyja. The gothi does not call upon either Frigga or Freyja

  • @pupsenok

Frigga is the same as Freja imo.

  • I love this part of the movie, I just wish I could understand better swedish since I havent managed to find an english subtitled version anywhere of this movie...
