Su estilo pasó del post-punk de sus inicios (Outlandos d'Amour) al reggae blanco que practicaron en Reggatta de Blanc, explotando su éxito en todo el mundo con su LP (Zenyatta Mondatta) al cual le seguiría Ghost in the Machine. Terminaron su carrera con un disco reconocido por la crítica como una de sus mejores producciones: Synchronicity, en la cual se encuentra uno de sus tema más conocidos, Every Breath You Take.

Liderados por Gordon Matthew Sumner, más conocido como Sting (nombre que significa "aguijón" en inglés, y que deriva de un jersey de rugby a rayas amarillas y negras, en plan avispa, que el bajista siempre llevaba puesto en su juventud), Andy Summers en la guitarra, y Stewart Copeland como batería, The Police fue uno de los conjuntos británicos con mayor éxito comercial en los años 70 y 80 gracias a su impetuoso pop-rock "new wave" enriquecido por algunas dosis de reggae y un talento instrumental y compositivo sublime.

Historia
El trío, además del cantante y bajista Sting (nacido el 2 de octubre de 1951 en Newcastle upon Tyne), estaba compuesto por el baterista Stewart Copeland (nacido el 16 de julio de 1952 en la localidad estadounidense de Alexandría, Virginia) y el guitarrista Henry Padovani, quien pronto sería sustituido por el experimentado Andy Summers (nacido el 31 de diciembre de 1942 en Lancashire), un músico que ya contaba con un largo recorrido en la música rock, pues había estado en bandas como The Animals o Zoot Money. También había tocado con Kevin Ayers o Neil Sedaka.

En 1977, tras foguearse en distintas formaciones inglesas de jazz y rock progresivo, el trío dio inicio a su carrera musical en la escena punk con el apoyo de su representante Miles Copeland, el hermano de Stewart. Su debut se produjo con el single Fall out, canción compuesta por Stewart que fue editada en el sello independiente IRS. El tema recogió una notable resonancia, hecho que llegó a oídos de los altos directivos de A&M, con la que comenzaron a grabar en 1978.

Allí publicaron el sencillo Roxanne, tema escrito por Sting, que en su primera edición no consiguió llamar la atención. La canción se incluyó en su primer álbum, Outlandos DAmour(1978), sin duda uno de sus mejores trabajos y el más enérgico e inmediato, en donde sonaban clásicos como el citado Roxanne, So lonely o Cant stand losing you. Además otras piezas menos conocidas como Next to you o Born in the 50s formaban parte de un LP extraordinario.

I'd forgotten how good these guys really were. It's sad how bands, years later, get pigeonholed into a few well known hits and that becomes their identity It's great to hear this and remember the breadth of good stuff they actually produced.
