Newton-Wellesley Hospital's Vernon Cancer Center has a brand new, state-of-the-art linear accelerator. Watch a demonstration of how the machine works. Also known as a linac, this device is most commonly used for providing external beam radiation treatments. It delivers a uniform dose of high-energy X-ray to the area of the patients tumor to destroy the cancer cells while minimizing the impact to surrounding non-cancerous tissue. On WCAC-TV's Oct. 11, 2009 show.
