Petrol bombs rain down as police, Catholics clash in Belfast riots

Police firing plastic bullets and powerful water cannons forced Catholic militants away from a disputed Belfast road on Tuesday as Northern Ireland's annual day of Protestant marches reached a fiery climax. Catholic youths lashed out at police both before and after the marches by the Orange Order, a Protestant brotherhood whose yearly July 12 demonstrations celebrate 17th-century military triumphs over Catholics - and often inspire a violent response from the province's minority. Hundreds of mostly teenage Catholics, who covered their faces with masks and hoods, waged running street battles with riot police in north Belfast.

The majority of those living in Northern Ireland are of Scottish origin and brought with them their Protestant faith.

@Flamorgan I could only find an article about people in Lurgan trying to hijack the train in 2010 but I'll take your word for it. I might go up the north on the 12th of July next year to see what the craic is. I wouldn't take part in any riots though, like you say its silly to cause damage for nothing. Would be fun but someone has to clean up the mess.

@Flamorgan what days are the loyalist marches on at? I might go up myself for the laugh and I'll see if what you're saying is true. I don't know Belfast at all and I doubt many of my friends do either so we wouldn't know where to go and would probably end up right in the middle of a loyalist area and get killed lol. Only joking, Ardoyne can't be too hard to find and I suppose the catholics won't kick the shit out of us since they could use the backup.

I'm from Dublin and I would have heard about people heading up the north for loyalist marches because if they were gonna do that, they'd head up in large groups. There are about 6 trains per day so the early ones would be completely packed and the PSNI would see them coming a mile away.

@Flamorgan yeah thats bullshit, the rioters don't come from the south. They're locals that don't like loyalists marching through their areas. The loyalists should just stay the fuck out of places they're not welcome.
