A 27 day journey, spanning over 670 km in the hopes of raising $2 million dollars towards building a paediatric cancer ward in the Jaffna General Hospital. That is Trail. Daunting as it may seem the team behind Trail have pledged their support and their commitment to completing this journey towards their cause.
Trail is a project initiated by the Colours of Courage Trust, a non-profit organization that has since its inception in 2008 has dedicated its resources towards the growing needs of infrastructure to treat cancer in Sri Lanka. At present, there is only one cancer hospital in Maharagama to support the needs of a population which is fast approaching the 20 million mark, thus making the need for another facility outside of Colombo a palpable one. Patients often travel long distances from all over Sri Lanka to receive the treatment they need to survive. The Colours of Courage Trust previously engaged in projects centered around the National Cancer Institute in Maharagama and is currently in the process of constructing a new Medical Intensive Care Unit in that facility.
The funds generated from this 27 day endeavour, commencing on the 1st of July will go towards the construction of a paediatric cancer wing in the Jaffna Hospital. This will enable children from the northern, north-central and eastern province to travel to Jaffna without having to make the strenuous journey to Colombo. With such a high rate recurrence and with treatment most often being administered over longer periods, the current situation does not allow for much hope. But with the construction of this new facility, Trail aims to give children just that. The possibility is that they too might hope for a brighter tomorrow, a healthy and a happy life.
