11 women and 4 men ordained as Anglican priests, plus 1 woman as deacon. At The Cathedral of St. Paul, Wellington, New Zealand, on 25 November 2006. Historical notes: The Anglican Church in New Zealand began to ordain women to priesthood in 1977. The New Zealand Anglican Church was the first to appoint a woman to head a diocese when Penny Jamieson became bishop of Dunedin in 1990. Only three Anglican communions worldwide currently have women bishops: the United States, Canada and New Zealand. The Wellington Cathedral of Saint Paul is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Wellington and is the seat of its bishop of Wellington. Work commenced on the cathedral in 1955, and was completed in 1998.

News from England, 26 Nov 06: Researchers at the University of Manchester say that women priests will save the Church of England from sinking in the future. David Voas, a senior researcher at the university, said statistics from last year's English Church Census showed that nearly half of all priests ordained in recent years have been women. He said: "Close to a quarter of male parish priests are 60 or older, and their average age is 54. Without women, the pulpits would become as de-populated as the pews in the years to come."

  • Correct me if I am wrong but, women can't be priests, if it is the Anglican church they are called vicars. Catholics have priests.

  • Women can be and are priests in all mainstream churches except for the Roman Catholic church. A priest does not have to be a vicar but a vicar does have to be a priest! In the Anglican church world wide, there are orders of deacons and priests. In the Anglican church a vicar is a priest who is in charge of a parish, a chaplain is responsible to a community such as a school, hospital, industry, university etc.

  • A priest may be a vicar, a monk, a spiritual director- definitely a priest by virtue of the scriptural understanding that the priesthood is an unbroken line of sacramental anointing from time immemorial- traced in the Christian tradition to Peter, James and the apostles( the apostolic succession through the laying on of hands in the sacrament of ordination essentially the same as the one here on YouTube.) Incidentally, the pope is the vicar of Rome- but he is still a priest!

  • Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful. There is hope for the church.

  • Yes, there is hope for the church - not only

from women priests but also from the young in spirit who are vibrant and willing to be creative. New ways are needed. This was one of the main messages that we heard during the service last November.

  • Christ called Men to the Priesthood. By allowing this facade to take place will only continue the falling away of people in the churches and in their faith.

  • Pope the anti christ? That is bull....there has never been Lutheran theology that the Popes are anti christ, it was only polemics due to the political situation. The Roman catholics are the friends of the Anglicans and also the Lutherans, and we have much more in common with them than the protestant congregations. Remember this senctence, which also was and is Lutheran and Anglican: Christianus mihi nomen est, catholicus cognomen.

  • That faded fresco "Fractio Panis" does NOT show a woman presiding at anything. This is clearly pointed out by a number of historians, which a quick check on Google will verify. The best, actually, by an Anglican. There is absolutely no record in history, theology or practice to verify women "priests." Be that as it may, the Holy See has infallibly declared that Orders can not be conferred on a woman, and that it is a grave a sinful act to attempt it. Women priests are IMPOSSIBLE.

  • @mediator4u Actually Christ did not call ANYONE to the priesthood. But the Holy Spirit called many to be Church leaders including many women - Lydia, Priscilla, Phoebe and so on. Google the Fractio Panis - a 2nd C catacomb fresco showing a woman presiding at the Eucharist. Priesthood as we know it was a uch later invention of the Church - after the misogynists had already taken over.

What causes 'falling away' is the lack of the Holy Spirit in the Church. Or being too stubborn to recognise it.

  • Thanks be to God !

Roman Catholic remember ur Pope haf wives and even haf many childrens some become Cardinal ! go to rome u know the history before u start accuse this or that ! U haf Woman Pope before do u know that ??

  • This is very beautiful.Maybe one day there will be women priest in the Catholic Church

  • @holyfamily5

... and let's not forget that The Holy Spirit in both Hebrew (ruac'h) and Greek (pneuma) are both FEMININE nouns. - confirming God's masculine AND feminine nature.

  • @dacatholicbandorgan

Actually, both Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and HH Pope Benedict went even further than 'sharing a platform'. During the pope's visit to the UK in 2010 they both knelt and prayed together at the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral - the spiritual home of the Anglican Church. I think praying together, simply as 2 Christian brothers, is far more profound than 'sharing a platform.. I dont think YOU are 'nutz' but maybe you're pretty ignorant.

  • @mediator4u

Actually Christ called no one to the priesthood. Priesthood as we know it now was a later invention of the church that was not widespread until the late second century. Before then both men AND women were church leaders (Lydia, Priscilla etc) and the Fractio Panis catacomb fresco of the earlly 2nd Century depicts a woman presiding at the Eucharist. Prejudice like this comment says more about the contributor than about the video clip.

  • @anglican2006 That is not true. Women 'priests' have never been allowed in any Catholic or Orthodox churches--which make up the vast majority of Christians both living and dead. In fact, women ministers were not allowed even in Protestant sects until the 20th century.

  • @dacatholicbandorgan so what is the reason of the pope for visiting the anglican arch bishop in his own place at canterbury, do you know?

  • Australia has had a female bishop since 2008.
