This piece was originally done in 1991 or 1992, as part of a student production called AfterWords. The biting satire of the lyrics fit what most of us that were active in the dance program were feeling at the time...even the non-majors. I enjoyed singing the piece, and asked my friend Mark Groll to choreograph a solo to it. He changed the ending between it's origin and Celebrate Dance. So, this is the other "recycled" piece I was refering to in the "Strange Fruit" comments. The lights were supposed to go out when he struck his final pose and the music ended. The key words in that previous sentence are "were supposed to". Surprise.

The entire musical "City of Angels", from which this piece was pulled, is a lyrical masterpiece, by my perception. If you ever get to see it, do. If not, buy the soundtrack. I enjoyed it for years, before I ever got the chance to see a community theater production of it.

For the credits, I included a snippet of the original broadway cast recording, as sung by the character Stine (Gregg Edelman)

ps--BTW, Joe learned both CD piano parts on Very, VERY short notice, and did a great job. Unfortunately, here his keyboarding was grossly undermodulated by the sound techs. †, M.

  • Sorry, but this was a one-time gig. I did have an active company from 1996-2004, but I moved to Nevada. I haven't done any company work since, but may start a company in the Reno region, very soon. Thanks for your interest. GBU, MDJ. †

  • Is this company still active if so where is it out of?
