FAQ

Q: What does the real score for this look like?
A: Here is the original manuscript, in John Philip Sousa's handwriting:
http://www.musanim.com/pdf/IMSLP18027...
You might also like looking at the original cover of the sheet music for the song:
http://www.musanim.com/img/StarsAndSt...
And, if you still want more, you can read about the piece here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_an...

Q: Who is playing this piece?
A: The performance is by the RFCM Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr.Keith J.Salmon (http://www.royalty-free-classical-mus...)

Q: Is there a way I could make the bar-graph scores myself?
A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate this display; you can get the (Windows) software here:
http://www.musanim.com/player/
There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; I usually go to the Classical Archives site first:
http://www.classicalarchives.com/

Q: Could you please do a MAM video of _________?
A: First, check my "to do" list:
http://www.musanim.com/all/MAMToDoLis... ...
If the piece isn't listed, read the "Could you please do a MAM video of _________?" item on my main FAQ:
http://www.musanim.com/mam/mamfaq.htm... ...
and if you think I'd consider doing it, email me (stephen at musanim dot com).

Q: What's the story behind this piece?
A: Sousa composed this march in his head on Christmas Day 1896; you can read more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_an...

Q: Please tell me more about the composer.
A: You can read about him here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Phi...

Q: Where can I find out more about the things youre doing?
A: Here is a good place to start:
http://www.musanim.com/mam/mamfaq.html

Q: Where can I get the MP3 of this?
A: There are MP3s of Sousa marches (though not this exact performance) here:
http://www.musopen.com/

Q: Can I get a DVD with this video (or others like it)?
A: Not this video, but others like it:
http://www.musanim.com/mam/video.html

Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean?
A: In most of my videos, they mean something definite; in this one, they are just to help you follow the various lines. The use of color isn't completely consistent.

Q: Why is the last note so short?
A: A bug in my software. I wanted to get the video posted in time for the 4th of July, so there was no time to fix it. Sorry. Maybe I'll re-do this video.

I wonder, is there any way to indicate dynamics? It would be good for a piece like this one, where the first repeat is piano and the second is forte. Or was that just the conductor's interpretation?

I've done some experiments with dynamics. My most recent version of the first movement of Beethoven's 5th symphony uses them, and there are some pieces for solo violin and solo cello which use them.

They go back to flute unless another piece calls for piccolo.
