@ah93704, agreed. Tommy Loughran did not have the firepower to keep Joe Louis off of him for an entire fight. Would have been entertaining while it lasted, though, and I'm sure Louis would have breathed a big sigh of relief when he finally caught up to the master boxer Loughran.
@ah93704, "average," maybe; definitely not "glass." As for a Loughran match vs Joe Louis, I'd give Tommy the edge for a number of rounds; I see the fight working out much the same way as did Joe's 1st fight vs another Philly great, Billy Conn, who gave Louis fits with his speed. Eventually, the fight would end the same way, too: Joe Louis would catch up to Tommy and put him away, and in a definitive way, no doubt.
@DannyA123 Good point. Loughran really was a master. I think his chin was better than average just not great. I'm not trying to say he was a wuss..anybody who can step into that ring deserves a lot of respect. I would have liked to have seen Loughran fight Louis but Loughran felt it was wrong to fight blacks. That would have been an interesting fight. I think Louis would have caught him. Whats your take?
@ah93704, I hear you, but still..only two KOs in 117 fights, because the third TKO was due to broken ribs, not being put to sleep. The other two stoppage losses were to Jack Sharkey a former champ, and to big-punching Steve Hamas. Granted Loughran was a defensive wiz, but his chin couldn't have been that bad to survive as many fights, and as many round as Tommy did. Remember, he himself wasn't a puncher, per se, and so Tommy's fights often went the full distance. Just saying.

@DannyA123 Loughran did well when he didnt get hit. When he got hit, his weakness was made manifest which was a less than stellar chin. Thats why he became so good at defense. He knew if he got hit too often his chin would fail him!
Loughran vs. Jimmy Young would be technically fascinating.

@DannyA123 You can see Louis sigh when he finally gets Billy Conn out of there. Thats one of my favorite knockouts ever!

@DannyA123 I agree. Louis always said "You can run but you can't hide!"

Sharkey never really lived up to his potential. He could have been one of the all time greats, but was inconsistent.
