King Harold didn't order his men to advance. After being repelled multiple times with the Saxon solid shield-wall still intact, the Normans knew they must do something to lure the Saxons downhill so the Cavalry Knights could use their deadly advantage to the full, so they used cunning just as the Saxons did at Stamford Bridge. During another assault, the Normans willingly spread the word that Duke William is dead and when the Bretons retreated, some Saxons gave chase and the shield-wall weakened
Its no surprise that the truth of history is lost. This revisionist history content is proof at the misinformation that obscures the true events. Harold did not order his men forward at Hastings, some broke ranks and chased the retreating Brettons and Normans and Harold called all others back to the shield wall. He also had no option other than to rush to Sussex to face William, as these were his own lands and the people where being massacred. Or so it says in most of the books I have read.
