This is a reading of a satirical poem I wrote back in the 80's, inspired by a silly remark of a friend of mine. I hope that you will enjoy it this Holiday Season. :-D

The Miracle On Portage Avenue (A Christmas Poem)

I remember, it was a bitter December day,
And I was downtown, visiting the salespeople
Who worked the front of the Family Hamburger House.
The sky was clear, but the traffic was noisy,
And my heart felt like a lump of coal: I was sick,
Sick unto death, of Christmas,
And the relentless, remorseless Christmas music
That tinkled and blared
As I scuffed my way through the pasty brown snow
That had clotted on the sidewalk, when
Sudden in my breats I felt a thrilling,
As though a million notes of music had played themselves upon my heart,
And in a cloud I saw coming a celestial choir,
Thousands of little gray sparrows arrayed in black tuxedo and top-hat,
Carrying tiny music stands.
In a gale of flappings and chirpings,
The natty birds descended on the Trees and the buildings,
The telephone lines and the street lamps,
And there was a silence in the city.
Then in slow crescendo, the Beatific Birds raised Their plaintive voices into mighty music:
The 'Ode to Joy' from Beethoven's ninth.
Music! that filled the streets and skies
And the little baskets overflowing, overflowing!
Never had my soul felt such a pleasure,
And I found myself singing with them,
As the people around me were. "Christmas!
Miracle of Faith and Life!" I cried, and the birds departed,
Leaving me on the street corner with a confused drug dealer.
