Hello primates welcome to the zoo!
Jessie, otherwise known as seekthevisceral,
left a question on my Don Q. ticks #4 video.
A most vexing question that has nagged at me
for the week since she left it.
You know Jessie, you DO earn your name!
For a week now,
I've delayed answering this potent question;
"Before hope came to be,
was there always a prerequisite
indicating that it would be a burden?"
You've had me thinking about Pandora,
and her box of "evils".

So many interpret hope
as the great compensator
for "the evils set loose upon the world".

But after considerable thought,
my guts tell me to concur
with Joseph Campbell's reflections on the tale.

Hope may actually be the greatest evil of all,

as it can still the motion of minds,
preventing us from fully perceiving
the problems we create,
thus we have no impetus in solving them.

For instance,
is not the hope of an afterlife in a given heaven,
the indirect cause of man's recklessness?

Doesn't hope induce a waking sleep
in the easily misled among us?

Other than hubris and narcissism,
is it hope that too readily relieves our conscience,
from our responsibilities
for our mindless endeavors
to make a hell out of our only home?

Is hope the blindfold we wear,
when and if we sign,
with the pen of our faith,
in the blood of our children,
a contract to be bound to an irrational belief?
What is your opinion of hope?

I tag you seekthevisceral,
http://www.youtube.com/user/seekthevisceral
because you set the stage for this play,
you should have a part,

AncientAtheist,
http://www.youtube.com/user/AncientAtheist
because I know you'll answer,

dprjones,
http://www.youtube.com/user/dprjones
because he's had to think about this,
himself lately,

bewarethelizards42,
http://www.youtube.com/user/bewarethelizards42
because of her pretty muffins,
not because of her admirable mind,

and her sister in Sci-Fi nelliediddle,
http://www.youtube.com/user/nelliediddle
as another expert
on the hopes painted on our minds
by the fictions we consume,

and if because if she answers,
I'll begin a kilt wearing tag for her.

To all of you,
enjoy your life,
the only thing not borrowed from those yet to be.

  • I don't think there was any prerequisite for hope because with consciousness and self awareness came many reflections of imagination that is the basis if abstract thought like hope, awe, shame, guilt, envy, ect

Animals only feel this is little to basic forms depending on how evolved or what species they are as well as the range possible with a individual animal

So really before our true awakening which must have been our species tonal language becoming a true oral history could hope be shared?

  • Hmm.

A reply video would be most welcomed!

  • wow not an easy question to answer!!! I may have to think about this for some time, but I will answer I promise

How could I resist the offer of a kilt wearing tag????

  • Take your time lass, it's cold outside to be paradin' around in not but tartan.

  • When i think of hope, i think of Bronte's poem on the matter.

  • watch?v=g7EJ1YQGmD4

Yes, that is the kind of hope I was talking about. I was going to say "the fools hope", but what is there to differentiate between the fool, mad-man, and valiant, when the tender caress delivers its hammer blow? Like from the trickster gods of old, how says one "no", to a gift such as this?

  • I'm gonna think on this one for a few. Good vid. Good subject.

btw- you have a great radio voice

  • Hope was in the box for a reason and that was because it was a vice of the world

The only reaosn it dodn't excape is because it didn't excape us, we can control it to help us, it is not a force loose upon the world

When things are at their worst hope can give you strenth or courage to carry on or rise to the occasion but the problem with hope is that when things are well or just so so in life it is false hope that misleads us

With it's illusions of screen hope is almost lose upon us

  • Muffins And A Kilt. Brought to you by PBS.

I will try to give an answer that may fit in the same realm as the question. How fortunate I am, to have my name approved by one I truly admire and respect. :)

  • Pretty muffins! :D Interesting a video, I shall give it some thought..

  • I just noticed that you had started making videos. I've been looking at some of them. Nice.

  • Hope need not be based on the false promises of a bloodthirsty fire demon. Hope can make the unendurable less so. Hope can free the soul from despair, if only for a little while. Hope does not come from a personified god, it comes from that part of ourselves that desires to go on despite the adversity that fate throws in our path. They say that faith can move mountains but hope can strengthen the weak until the mountain is built.

And thats as deep as I get in 500 characters or less.
