A friend and I recently took the day off and drove to the Salton Sea in California's Imperial Valley to have fun and explore. We visited with Leonard Knight, who has built a colorful, primitive monument in the desert called Salvation Mountain. He's a passionate, driven man-- the sort of guy I'd ordinarily peg as a zealot and steer clear of. For some reason, Leonard shines as the real deal to me. And Salvation Mountain, which I originally thought would be a trashy, kitch-y place, has broadened my definition of beauty.
