Answer to my Q below: When I made the new layer @ (8:41), I missed filling the layer background with White Fill @ (9:03). With the white fill in the new layer, it works- the "Rippled" or "Wavy" plane is created. Without the white fill in the new layer, the Menu command sequence: 3D>>New Mesh From Grayscale>>Plane just makes a flat dimensionless object. I hope this helps someone else, saves them some time.
I'm having the same trouble as Tonicwine999, at 9:36. I'm using CS5 Extended PC. I was mimicing your lesson, & I got the rippled 3D object once, but then I guess I changed something and all I get now is a flat stripped plane. I can rotate and flip it in 3D, but it is totally flat, all of the wave like character went away. Any suggestions? Please? I really want to do this. This is a great video, thank you.
When I get to the part at 9:36 when the plane is meant to change into 3D, my computer shows a flat 2D image hat you can turn around in 3D. Is it because I might need better graphics?
Great video... very informative. You know it's a great tutorial video when you face palm yourself hard and bow your head down in disgrace, exclaiming "Wow how did I not know that?! I feel stupid... stupid stupid stupid... they made it look easy!" Haha.
@chipsher42 Thanks for that.

@Tonicwine999 I had the same problem as you. I found an answer, and posted it in the comments for the video.
