Dang, I'm coming for dinner. I like the crate garden idea. I just got my raised bed garden up. I am working the soil and compost right now and I will be planting a fall garden in a couple weeks.

My first bed was all plants from lowes and home depot. My second bed is roughly 80% grown from seeds. Next year I will grow as much as I can from seeds though.

how did you know what you could grow in crates and what had to be grown in the earth?

I didn't, this was my first time so its an experiment to see what would grow out of crates from the selection I had to choose from. So far cucumbers and anything that runs(melons etc) don't do well in crates IMO.
