Mother/land is a new track/release off X-VANDALS fiery forth coming second cd/album, GhettoBlaster (coming in early 2009). The video was released on election day and is an audio/visual commentary on Obama and America.

The song is a reinterpretation of Pink Floyd's "Mother" from their classic album "The Wall". Juice brings a rough and rugged beat and flexes his skills on the turntables while Not4Prophet's raw vocal style straddles the line between between anger and fear.

The idea behind this video was to put the Obama presidential campaign into a historical framework in terms of where America is with Black folks in America. Mother/land is a visual meditation on the two things that have given birth to and raised Obama into who he is today, his biological mother (and father) and the land of his birth America. Between these two forces we can see where Obama has come.

But the video is not just about Obama but about Black America. In the video Obama is a symbol of Black America. His trials and tribulations are that of Black Americas trials and tribulations. As Not4Prophet asks at the end of the song, "Mother did it have to be so high" it can be immediately understood that Not4Prophet is talking about the price that being Black in America extracts from us.

  • cool stuff from the X-Vandals crew..

  • the trippy acid music is hot, and Obama with his white mother/motherland, I wonder what's in his head and how he sees the world, he in it and he's outside of it

  • parallels and contradictions madd ill.. imagery and subject matter completely alters how this song may have been originally viewed.. in a refreshing nuanced kinda way...

    :c)

  • Oh Bomba ya this is off the hook!

  • The video is still relevant even after the first year and a half of this administration. As the White Nationalist rallies increase, and are becoming more brazen, one must wonder about the future. With White Nationalists shooting up the Pentagon, flying planes into the IRS building, spitting on Black lawmakers and calling them nigger, Minutemen and dead Mexican bodies at the border, and White gun ownership spiking since the election, one must wonder how long until there is bloodshed?

  • This video kicked my ass. Powerful. The fifteen year old I was who fell in love with Pink Floyd had no idea the twist those lyrics could have in the new millenium.

  • Wow, this video goes way beyond simply being about Obama, and IS a kind of history lesson on being Black in America.

Love the altered rap goes rock rendition of Mother too! Excellent!

  • woooo! trippy...in a good way

  • Love this. Love the scratching.

  • Sorry, posted comments in the wrong order 4,3,2 and 1 ; instead of 1,2,3, and 4. This is all new to me! I shall learn in time.

    Thanks again,
