4.0 earthquake hits east of San Diego County

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred at 9:53 p.m. Friday, four miles southeast of Octotillo -- the latest significant aftershock from the 7.2 Easter Sunday quake near Mexicali, says the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake started six miles deep, near the Laguna Salada fault zone. But the shaker might have started on one of the many smaller faults that run parallel to Laguna Salada.

Several 4.0 or larger quakes have hit the same area over the past 10 days, along with more than a dozen quakes in the 3.0 to 3.9 range. There was also a 5.1 that was widely felt throughout San Diego County. USGS says the quakes represent a normal aftershock sequence.
