Chet Baker - One With One

"One With One" is, according to Baker, "the most modern thing on Baby Breeze. It's pretty and I like to play on it, but it's a hard tune to blow on." Baker's inventiveness makes it sound easy. The voicings on this Galper composition and arrangement are very attractive, and the mood and harmonic flavor of the piece is reminiscent of the Miles Davis Sextet in the Kind of Blue stage. In Galper's solo, it's worth noting how his last four bars "set up" the return to the ensemble statement.

Re his 'practicing' it is well documented that Chet did not play the Arban book or practice the technical aspects of the trumpet. Most sources agree he had a natural aptitude so that he could play 'effortlessly'. He mostly played by ear (and this may be the clue to his wonderful soloing and ability to sing through the horn). He DID practice learning songs and in later years recorded himself and studied those to improve the music. When young he went to every jam that would have him.

@wajame oh yeah...he didnt practise endless hours right? he'd get the trumpet and as soon he touched it became a great musician...yeah right

@califgirl101 I read his biografy, an i a resume i can say that he did nothing to be the great musican that he was.....he born with the gift, but i had a cost of a very tubulent life full of drugs and escesses.........he died by himself in the 80s...

Listening to someone able to respond instantaneously to just about any harmonic progression is amazing ... this is indeed a tremendously difficult progression to navigate. Not really predictable and I suspect few players could respond to it the way Baker did.

I wouldn't really know since this is the first time hearing the music of Chet Baker! Can somebody tell me please what ever happened with him and when he passed away?

Baker never ceases to amaze me,in that -no matter how fucked up his personal life was-he always sounded so good on records(except for the singing,but I guess that's an acquired taste)
