1,000,000 was on Chronic Town, released in 1982. In any case, the Jam's "But I'm Different Now" was recorded well before REM's "1,000,000", and so any possible plagiarism wasn't from The Jam's end. I am a musician who loves The Jam, and also early REM, and I don't see much resemblance to begin with, but just saying this for the record.

The lyrics are similar to but not copied from the Beatles 'Getting Better'.
" I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her away from the things that she loved.
Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene and I'm doing the best that I can"

This song is so true.

@rebeltaby : that's what i'm saying you know : The Jam's song was written before REM's one, so it's a steal from Buck (REM) or coïncidence...

@NickJunoJr no sorry mate this was much earlier

@Skiffington & nmorgan346 : I've checked cos I have a very detailed REM biography and the Jam's song was released nearly 1 year before REM wrote 1,000,000 (summer 1981 ; it was released in 1982) so even though I'm a very big REM fan I must admit Peter Buck could have stolen the riff or it's a coincidence (the rest of the song, vocals,...is different)
the main riff sounds exactly like REM's 1,000,000 released the same year (I think)...musical coïncidence or plagiarism ?

@NickJunoJr The Jam album was released in 1980 & the REM album Dead Letter Office was recorded between 1981 - 1986 and released in 1987 so I'm afraid you're wrong about plagiarism
