The family of 13-year-old Austin Redd speak after a school assembly recognizing the Francis Howell Middle School staff and students for their quick thinking when Austin collapsed from cardiopulmonary arrest during gym class. The school nurse used an AED (automated external defibrillator) to jump start Austin's heart. He was then transferred to Progress West Healthcare, and ultimately to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where doctors diagnosed and treated a rare heart defect. The Redd's believe every school should have an AED.
What a humble kid. I'm so proud of him and especially the folks who took the fast initiative to help.
I'm AED certified and just yesterday, became an AED instructor. The importance is HUGE! They are easy to use and anyone can do it! This video can make you cry!
