Music Sunday at the North Shore Unitarian Church, Deerfield, Illinois ... Another powerful piece sung by the choir, under the direction of Wayland Rogers, Musical Director ... "EREV SHEL SHOSHANIM", composed by Josef Hadar, arranged by Jack Klebanow.
EREV SHEL SHOSHANIM (Evening of Roses) was written in the style of an Israeli folk song by Josef Hadar and Mosher Dor. This arrangement is by Jack Klebanow. The style and imagery of the text suggest the biblical "Song of Songs".
"Let us go out to the grove. Myrrh, fragrant spices and incense are a threshold for your feet. Night falls slowly and the wind of roses is blowing. Let me whisper you a song, secretly of Love. Dawn, a dove is cooing. Your head is filled with dew. Your mouth is a rose unto the morning. I will pick it for myself."
The theme of Music Sunday is:
ONE WORLD, MANY VOICES
Wayland writes the introduction as follows:
One of the most important ways of understanding a culture different form our own is to sing and play its songs, read and hear its poetry, learn to speak its language and dance to its rhythms. We hope that today's service devoted to music and poetry from around the globe does its part in helping to transcend the boundaries of language and culture to bring us to a deeper understanding of "other". Our celebration of diversity begins with two pieces from the African tradition. PROCESSION FOR PEACE is the first.

This is a beautiful song. I did this with the West Virginia All-State choir one year, and I loved it!
