Russian forces opened a second battlefront in western Georgia on Monday, moving deep into Georgian territory from the separatist province of Abkhazia. They seized a military base in the town of Senaki and occupied police precincts in the town of Zugdidi.

I think Russia was waiting for Georgia to attack Ossetia so they could send a message. But the real message is see what will happen once Poland left in american defense systems. Russia is upset that America is surrounding then with bases and "defense systems", just as America was upset in 1962 over Cuba.
