  • hi i have my katana with some darker spots on it any clues how to clean them thx

  • @haqallafox Hi, thanx for you comment. If you have a true Japanese sword then I would suggest you leave it for an expert to deal with. If you have a replica katana like a Paul Chen or similar then there are some things you can do.

Applying oil and allowing it to "soak in" to the metal/rust and wiping clean can help to loosen rust spots. Leaving clean oil on the blade and repeating the next day can start to remove spots over a period of time say 3 - 4 weeks.

  • @ZenShinDo If that does not work then if you are up to it the rust will have to be polished or "scratched" off. The best way to do this is to find something harder than the rust but softer than the steel to "scrape" away the rust. Bone works well for this. Any treatment like this can and probably will leave marks or scratches in the steel, so you need to decide the value of the blade and if the "spots" are more or less acceptable than the marks caused by cleaning. If in doubt leave them!!

  • @ZenShinDo If in doubt leave them and continue to oil the blade regularly. Hope this if of help to you.

  • Thank you for this vid. Cleaning his sword is good, cleaning with respect and reverence is much better. a french fan of japanese swords.
