  • Does anyone know of any film clip footage in existence that is on the famous tap dancer called "Groundhog"? By the way, Baby Laurence Jackson is FANTASTIC!

  • I just read Miles Davis's autobiography, and he's right, Baby is the best!

  • To tymjr, you are so right. That same year I drummed backing up Baby Laurence using brushes. As you know, but perhaps the others do not, brushing along with a master dancer like Baby Laurence requires you "dance" with your drums along with him. The funny part of that session is that Papa Jo Jones was in the audience and he ran up and grabbed me by the shoulderes and demanded I go to his studio the next day and he taught me for the next few years. Those were grand days.

  • Baby Laurence & Groundhog were two of the main dancers held in high regard.

  • Joseph Wiggins,

Baby Laurence would dance all the time for fun outside the Apollo door and on the streets of Harlem.

  • Miles Davis said them and Buddy Briggs,The Step Bros and others (LD,Laffy, Fred and Sledge) used to talk about Fred Astaire like he wasn't nothing and how no could hold a candle to them....sad that heroin got some of 'em...All those tap dancers used to come uptown and steal their moves and go back downtown with them...Sophie Tucker took from Ethel Waters...etc

  • Heads better get up on Baby Laurence!

  • "Baby Laurence" along with "Groundhog", & "The Nicholas Brothers" were the best dancers in history.
