Egyptian Guys in Cairo Dancing baladi on the Nile

What we in the West call "Belly Dance", is a theatricalized version of one of the social dances done throughout the region of tghe Middle east and North Africa. Its done by men, women, young and old. Its only the professional version done in night clubs that is considered by most to "a woman's job". I saw many guys who were good dancers, however, filming was difficult because of all the people moving around.

A word of caution: Women object very strongly to being taped or photographed. I stopped filming when the girl got up because she had just riffed a guy a new one on the previous boat for taking her picture!

The party boats across from the Hilton are cheap. For 2 Egyptian pounds, (34 cents U.S.), they take you on a 15 min spin. They offer the local population, of families means of affordable entertainment, and the young guys a fun way to blow off some steam. Because of the low cost most people spend the night boat hoping. Gives a great opportunity to see some good, (and not so good), dancing in its native setting.

I just wanted to thank you for posting this, Tarik. I find the way the guys in this video dance very inspiring. They seem so free and joyous.

I'm guessing you've seen this already but, in case you've haven't, there's a really cool turkish dancer you can find by looking up "snY1c3DiS44" on youtube. His style is less relaxed, more boisterous than the style exhibited by the men in this video. And it looks equally fun!

Thanks. I've added it to my collection. That is the Turkish style of social dance. It is much more earthy and there's a lot more abdominal movements than Egyptian dance. But you're right, the spirit is very much the same. This is the real spirit of these dances for both the men and women as versus the sexy image we're use to seeing in the media.

There were women also, but they were on the other side of the boat with their families. It would be morally wrong for me to post those videos as Egyptian women are very modest and object strongly to being photoed or videod by strange men. I stoped this clip when I did because the girl almost kicked some guys ass for taking her picture with his cell phone earlier!
