While touring the Washington D.C. area, we also drove down to George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, perched on the Potomac a few miles south. The plantation home of our first President, the Mount Vernon main house was erected in the late 1740s by Lawrence Washington. In 1752, the property passed to Lawrence's widow and George, who was already living at Mount Vernon and managing the plantation. He later bought the portion left to Lawrence's widow and began to expand and improve the property. Most of the work was performed by slaves and artisans, who doubled the size of the house. Mount Vernon is open seven days a week, all year long. It's well worth a visit.
