Ov denotes Observation. They were used as forward observer and in reconisence roles. Some countries use them as light attack aircraft as well. I'm sure uncle Sam slung a few rocket pods on them from time to time.
There was a push from Boeing a few years back to produce the OV-10X Light Attack Aircraft for deployment to Afghanistan in the COIN/FAC role. I'm fairly certain that idea did not come to fruition.
That’s pretty cool. The U.S Army had an aircraft like this decades ago (used back in Vietnam) and I think this was there last attack fixed wing aircraft which now the use rotary wing attach craft like the AH-64 Apache.
Don't think this is as fast as lets say a P-51 Mustang, but it's still pretty unique
Actually, I never could get that plane to do a Zurabatic Cartwheel; it would do something spastic resembling a lumshevak. What I did do (when I was the target for the Red Eye missile school) (to get the plane turned around for another strafing run)…do a shallow pull off, fly away for about 5-10 sec, pull it straight up, as the airspeed passes through about 50 smothery apply full rudder and full opposite aileron. It does a very nice hammerhead…you’re lined up for another strafing run
One of the missions that VMO-2 did when I was with them, was to provide a target for the “Red Eye” anti-aircraft missile school at 29 Palms (namely the airplane)…to say that that got crazy is an understatement!
@Skippy585 Wattdaya mean can it do a roll or a loop!? I flew the OV-10 with VMO-2…Google this Polish test pilot: “Janusz Żurakowski”. There is an acrobatic maniuver named after him; the "Zurabatic Cartwheel"…try one of those! Oh, if you do, you have to pull one of the engines into full reverse…IN FLIGHT (a prohibited maneuver).
Nice toy !!!

Close but not correct. The army still flies fixed wing. The C-23 Sherpa as well as Beech King Airs and Cessna Citations.
