U.S. Rep. Todd Akin announced this morning that he will seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Missouri that's coming up for election in 2012.

During an 11 o'clock announcement event at the Drury Inn in Creve Coeur, Mo., the six-term Republican told a crowd of nearly 100 supporters, elected officials and news media representatives he is running for the U.S. Senate so that Missouri citizens can have a true conservative representing them in the seat now occupied by liberal Democrat Claire McCaskill.

Flanked by his wife, Lulli, and two of his six children, Akin began by defining the seriousness of the 2012 election.

"America today faces a choice between two futures. The democrats are charting of reckless spending and a lot of government regulation," he said, "and the alternative is limited government and freedom. The 2012 election will determine which course we choose and also define the future for our children."
