Has anyone asked the survivors of the crew of the E.F. what they want done with their relatives remains or effects? I think that the relatives should have the final say, not some dimwit Congressman.

And who was a MAJOR financier of the Fitz.................Makes sense to me.

stupak is getting into the phase were he thinks he owns the wreck and witch i will put this in easy-to-understand words. " HEY SHANNON, QUIT TOUCHING MY STUFF!!!!!!"

Fred Shannon proved himself as the better man!
I find it strange that the Edmund Fitzgerald lasted less than 20 years. The Arthur Anderson which is slightlt shorter weathered the same storm as the Fitzgerald and is still around today, over 35 years later. I have no idea if Northwestern Mutual cheaped out on the construction and we may never know. But most businesses have a motivation to save money on big projects like building ships. The stipulation of their shipbuilding contract was it would be the biggest ship on the Great Lakes...

@CMink7777 Ramsey, a naval architect who worked on the Fitz design, said there was a flaw in her design. She was too long for her width and this resulted in excessive multi-axial bending and springing. The Anderson had structural problems too that were corrected when her hull was stiffened by converting her to a self-unloader. Ramsey wrote several books about the Fitz. You can also read more about the Fitz's hull on the SS Edmund Fitzgerald Wikipedia article.

Just to clarify - Stupak's U.S. House of Representatives Financial Disclosure Statement for Calendar Year 1997 reported a loan from Northwestern Mutual Insurance Co. for $10,001 - $15,000.
