@TheKingDuffMan extract that folder to the one in garrysmod ( in this case probably being garrysmod/garrysmod/materials? )

@TheKingDuffMan Hmmm... thats happened to me too. try one of the following
a.) unmount exit come back mount it then exit come back and then play the map or something that had the checker board
b.) Using gcf scape ( asuming you have it if not then google it its very usefull) go to either episode 2 content, or materials and have a look there if you think you found it then extract the files ( right click then extract or the button on top) OR go back one and extract that folder
