I picked up After Burner for the 32X and have to admit... this is the first time I've ever played After Burner! I remember the arcade from the 80's but never did play it. From what I can tell this is an excellent port on the 32X!

  • Is the 32X worth owning?

  • @ATARI800XLfan Well at first I just wanted it for Doom and it was almost worth it for that alone. It has some other good ports like this, Space Harrier, Mortal Kombat II and also Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing. You can get Virtua Racing on the Genesis but it is better on the 32X. If you're a collector you're going to want one. Otherwise just pick one up if it's cheap and comes with ALL the required cables.

  • I don't have the game in front of me so I can't verify but to roll, shouldn't you "doubleclick" in the direction you want to go?

  • Not sure but you can see in the options with the 6 button controller says A = rolling.

  • I've worked on the original arcade machine. This is very good for a console port!

    The original used 2x 68000 CPU's and a Z-80.

I wish the 32X had more games in it's day. Sega always had cool hardware but got screwed on software.

  • Afterburner is one of the greatest arcade video games ever made. The arcade versions are the best, of course, because of the throttle controls. And, yes, this was a hugely popular game back in the day. We 1980s kids never really ask for more from a videogame, really - speed, killer graphics, lots of explosions, cool barrel rolls. Oh, to do barrel rolls, you have to be at maximum speed. You should play the arcade version on MAME. Another one to try is Blue Lightning on Atari Lynx (Handy).

  • This is the best version for any console no question about it. This game was the only reason I bought a 32X back in the day. I still have the Dreamcast version but the 32X version is better.

  • @ATARI800XLfan its been up in my attic for decades lol could never bring myself to part with it. it gotta bad wrap & was mishandled. the games were enjoyable at the time i always thought. doom 32x starwars 32x & virtuafighter/racer were my personal stand outs

  • @tatobich

Saturn is better, but the 32X one is very close. There are a few less pixels used on the ground, and a bit less detail, but it really isn't very noticeable unless you compare them side-by-side. No loading is also nice. I play the 32X version more than the Saturn for that reason. :)

  • @MN12BIRD dont forget knuckles chaotix

  • you are right, mate, this is the best version if you compare with the arcade one indeed- very similar ones. I am surprised

  • @ATARI800XLfan No I bought that shit I worked for Sega spent more time with it in the fix it shop than playing the Friggin console....

  • Nice! we nerds are a happy bunch.

  • so it seems sega 32x = sega arcade hardware from 1987.. If only the 32x came out a few years earlier

  • Near the Arcade version's quality.

  • doing barrel rolls is nauseating but so satisfying (and half the time you do it on accident)
