Mr. Kabutey Nartey is the headmaster at Manye Academy, a school which he started from his own home in order to provide educational assistance to a growing population of migrant families that were moving into Kpone Barrier (outside of Tema in Ghana, West Africa). Currently, the school has grown to accommodate 300 students and has 16 teachers on staff. The school consists of 9 classrooms sheltered by corrugated tin roofing, equipped with a chalkboard, desks and benches. These buildings are intended to be temporary as there are plans to build a large school compound. The financial situation of Manye Academy is poor and they will never be able to build a permanent school complex unless outside investment is found. 'The Afri-Can Connection' was a partner with Manye Academy (2008-2009) and one of our jobs was to find Mr. Nartey the financial resources so that Manye Academy stayed operational and helped it to expand into a permanent brick school building. Mr. Nartey and his wife have given everything they can into building Manye, funding it's day to day operation and paying teachers wages. In addition to all of this, they routinely provide meals out of their own kitchen for hungry children and help students and their family seek medical attention by covering the cost of doctors visits when necessary.
